1. What beautiful butterflies the Painted Ladies are! The orange, black, and white on their wings is stunning.

2. The colours underside the wings are a softened grey. Notice that only 4 legs show! The front two legs are folded into recesses in the chest area. 3. Can you see the proboscis? It is usually curled up under the "chin".

4. Butterflies that had damaged wings were placed in a large net enclosure that I made. We decided that we would keep these ones safe in the classroom rather than release them.

5. The butterfly hatching box was commercially made. It was very useful and quite attractive, even though it was only made of cardboard with acetate "windows".

6. Thanks to a B.C. Entomological Society "Bucks for Bugs" grant, we were able to purchase a marvelous "Butterfly Pavilion". At first the Pavilion is housed in the library so that the whole school can enjoy our butterflies for the few days before we released them.
7. The Pavilion is large enough for one or two children at a time to go inside and "sit with the butterflies"! We made sure that everyone in the class had this exciting opportunity!

8. Thanks to our wonderful Parent Association, in 1998/99 we were able to take our pavilion out the library door and into the outer courtyard named "The Sanctuary". The parents built a fantastic pond area, complete with a fountain!
