Mouse Tails:

The Tale of Cheeser - Page 2

Mrs. B. gave a big sigh. "I think," she said slowly, "that our little Cheeser is not just a female mouse. I think that our little Cheeser is about to become a Mommy mouse! She must have mated with a male mouse in the pet store!"

Mr. B. and Mrs. B. took a closer look at Cheeser. Sure enough, there were little bulges in Cheeser's fur that looked like little jelly beans. Mrs. B. got to work right away to clean out Cheeser's house and change some of the "furniture".

"Those little babies will need a cozy container. That old hide-out just won't do!" Cheeser scampered excitedly around the cage as Mrs. B. fixed and fussed. Finally the new house was ready. There was a cozy box on the bottom which led to another container on top. Mrs. B. didn't know if Cheeser would like her "nursery" to be upstairs or downstairs, so now Cheeser could choose.

"I wonder when those babies will be born?" Mrs. B. didn't have to wait long to find out the answer to her question. She got a second surprise that weekend... the babies were born on that very Sunday night! It was a good thing that she had taken Cheeser home that weekend!

This is a picture of Cheeser and her babies on Day 2.

Baby mice are born hairless and blind.
No wonder they looked like little jelly bean lumps before they were born!
