My rats serve as a jump-off point for a year-long unit theme - how can we understand, recognize, and respond to prejudice? Because rats have such a terrible reputation, they're perfect ambassadors - most children think of rats as horrible, nasty, and dirty; once they get to know my boys, however, they can't understand how ANYONE can think such a thing!

I'm always open to hearing about how other teachers deal with "the parent issue," and I'd love to find an e-mail list of teachers with classroom pets... perhaps start one, if there are enough folks interested.

Classroom pets: I took my puppy to school this past year. Twice. I was reprimanded by my superiors for doing so. Their statement, "A dog does not belong in the classroom." I was using my puppy as an educational tool in the sense that she was a little 10 pound puppy (Shar-pi) with wrinkles and a sweetness. The kids wrote about her, drew her and petted her. It was a good experience for my seriously emotionally disturbed students and the administration is unbending.
Previous class pets:
Guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, bunnies, praying mantis (who had millions of babies), fish, and pet rocks :-)
Pets at home:
A Shar-pi puppy.
Other animal projects:
I doubt that my Principal would approve. I'd like for you to send me some information regarding the benefits of having a classroom pet for kids who have serious emotional issues. I know the benefits, since I've done it before. My administration needs research documents before they allow anything out of the ordinary.
