Classroom pets: I
took my puppy to school this past year. Twice. I was reprimanded by
my superiors for doing so. Their statement, "A dog does not belong
in the classroom." I was using my puppy as an educational tool
in the sense that she was a little 10 pound puppy (Shar-pi) with wrinkles
and a sweetness. The kids wrote about her, drew her and petted her.
It was a good experience for my seriously emotionally disturbed students
and the administration is unbending. |

Bunny ~ She is a new addition to our classroom. We had a beloved
hamster for 2 1/2 years which just recently passed away :o( I
or the children would take home the hamster "Pickles"
over the weekends, and it seemed to work out well. The bunny
however, I feel has different needs so I will be taking her home

Gardens is a large botanical display garden that has an education
program. This involves High School Juniors and Seniors
for the GAP program on Insect Pest Management. (GAP means Groundskeeping
Apprenticeship Program!) There are also "bug days"
for elementary age children. Classroom pets: rose-hair tarantula, hissing cockroaches, palmetto bugs, and Giant Prickly Australian walking sticks. Also, occasional pests and beneficials we are studying, especially insect parasitic wasps. Previous class pets: ladybird beetles, insect parasitic wasps Pets at home: all of the above (!) plus corn snake, ball python, ferrets, emus, chickens, goats, Toulouse geese, iguana, cockatiels (including hand-fed babies), dogs, cats and a miniature donkey!
