: Last year I had a large fish tank with sharks. The kids loved
it, but the tank had a bad leak over the summer and could not be fixed.
The sharks were given to the Exceptional Learner's dept. I would like
something NEW! Previous class pets: This is my 3rd year of teaching and I have always had fish. Pets at home: Clover Bud is my precious angel kitty! I have a homemade scrapbook on my desk at school and my children LOVE to look and know all about Clover. I also have an outside cat, Rocky, and a lab who is also precious--his name is Copper Sunshine. Other animal projects: We will be reading a lot about all sorts of animals rescuing owners and others. Last year, we completed a HUGE unit on the book, BECAUSE OF WINN DIXIE. This book has many different animals--it concentrates a great deal on a dog and bird. Animal info. wanted: I would just love any helpful suggestions of what would make a good classroom pet. I do not want the pet to be unhappy with it's surroundings in the classroom, but I really would like for my kids to experience having a pet since some do not have any at home. Web site: |

None at the moment. I have several pets at home that I hope to integrate
into my classroom, but I need to get some better facilities set up for
this. Previous class pets: Every time I catch something, it ends up in my classroom for a day or more. Pets at home: A very good question. First we have a white male bunny rabbit whose name is Fred. He is somewhat aggressive so we don't mess with him a lot. Other mammals we have are our three rats. At this point we have one male and two females. They are to be breeders for a steady supply of food for our other pets. Their names are Puck (gray and white male), Ophelia (gray female), and Desdimona (honey colored female). Next, we have two turtles. The largest is a Southern Painted Turtle. She is about 3 inches wide and 4-4.5 inches long. We also have a common musk turtle. He is about half the size of our painted. They get along great! The prizes of my animal collection are my snakes. Amanda, our yearling texas rat snake, is utterly beautiful. She is a great feeder, has been from day one! Last but not least our Black rat snake. He is 5 feet of muscle and power! He is completely docile and LOVES to be stroked! I have pictures of my snakes, my rats and my turtles. Email me if you would like to see them! Other animal projects: My passion is reptiles, however I have a strong interest in most all animal types. I will be doing some type of animal related project this year with my students. Does anyone have any ideas of one that would be relatively easy and inexpensive? Animal info. wanted: : I am always interested in what other teachers are doing in their classrooms. Web site: |

large water turtles about 5 yrs old, 2 fancy goldfish one gold one black
w/ bug eyes about 4 yrs old, hermit crabs, hissing cockroaches, hamsters
siberian, gerbils, guinea pigs that reproduce much too often, 2 large
iguanas that i never would have accepted if I had known that they get
big really fast. 2 cockatiels, 2 doves and 2 parakeets and finches,
african water frogs. We have so much fun and the children love these pets! Most of them have been free. People fould out about my interest in pets and bring me the pets they no longer can care for. the only pet I could not keep was a Ferret. I was afraid he would bite and did not care for the smell or the amount of poop that I would have had to clean! I want to get more insects for my classroom. We have also had tadpoles turned into toads. Previous class pets: tarantula Pets at home: 1 schnauzer Jake he is learning to sing. We rescued him from an unhappy home. 2 cats, inside fish and frogs, outside fish, and a turtle in a very small pond. We have a cockatiel that a friend found on a construction site and brought to me. A few gerbils and a new cockatiel we found yesterday. I am visiting my sister in St. Louis Mo. and I parked my car in front of her house and the bird landed on the street right in front of us. I told my 13 year old daughter to hurry there is a cockatiel in front of the car. She jumped out and the bird was so exhausted that we were able to throw a thin blanket over it and bring it into the house. She has been caring for it and it seems to be in good health. We will contact some area vets on Mon. to see if any one has reported a missing bird and put up some posters if no one claims it we will some how drive back to Savannah with a bird on our shoulders. Clara named the bird Louie. Other animal projects: I'll let you know later. Animal info. wanted: More about millepedes and other insects Web site: |

Classroom pets: Until
last week when I was written up by my administrator for putting my students
in jeopardy… a ball python, a plated lizard, a rose-hair tarantula,
a newborn kitten-which my six-year old son dug for three hours to rescue
under our crawl space- and a rat. I began searching to see if any other
teachers had written evidence or support for having animals in the classroom.
I feel that it is very beneficial to them, just to expand their horizons,
allow them to gain empathy for animals, and helps me tremendously with
my BD kids, I can-I mean I could use it as a tool. My students are angry,
and I am overwhelmingly angry. Any support from anyone would be appreciated.
My students are currently writing letters to the school superintendent-who
even as an ex-science teacher, is supporting this decision. Previous class pets: see above Pets at home: Three dogs, one cat, two guinea pigs, one ball python, rose hair tarantula, plated lizard, white rat, one hamster Other animal projects: I teach physical science but incorporate animals-this year to teach the scientific method we watched as caterpillars cocooned and became viceroys. My students actually got to watch them emerge and we let them go into our courtyard.(By the way, my principal said I can't do this one next year.) as well as presenting to local schools & conferences. As a Head Start
teacher I had a nature center with mostly reptiles & amphibians (~10
tanks). At our workshops we try to demystify the practice of having
critters in the classroom by showing how they can be integrated across
the curriculum. Previous class pets: Pets at home: My menagerie at home consists of 2 blue tongued skinks, 2 leopard geckos, 2 white's tree frogs, 2 day geckos, 2 slider turtles, an Asian box turtle, giant millipedes, giant hermit crabs, earthy worms and meal worms (along with the life-cycle stages of the darkling beetle), a red-sided garter snake and an Arizona Mt. king snake. Other animal projects: In our programs we study ways to contrast & compare animal biology, habitat, environment& needs. guinea pig (female), just bought a small aquarium for fish Previous class pets: Pets at home: Other animal projects: In fourth grade we do an animal studies unit - we have about 20 live crabs, 20 live aquatic frogs, and 20 live land snails. Students are put in groups of four with 2 of each animal per group. They must create the habitat and care for the animals. It's a very fun unit, but somewhat stinky! Animal info. wanted: I love my guinea pig. Last year was my first year to teach. The kids absolutely loved her and were very protective of her. She really created some class unity. We did not really use her for any educational projects however. The children learned responsibility because each got to be her caretaker for at least a week. I would like to use her for educational projects. It would be nice to see what others have done with their guinea pigs. I am tempted to breed her. One of my students last year who had a male guinea pig begged me to let them mate. My guinea pig has such a wonderful nature and is great with the kids. I can't decide. Do you know the length of gestation. My guinea pig will be a year old in August. Is she old enough to have babies? Web site: |
