Pets at home:
I have 7 dogs at home. (three in Foster Care)

Classroom pets: Scully, a West Highland White Terrier, is our classroom pet. My principal recommended I bring him into the classroom as the class pet. The students adore him they assume his care and treat him as their own. I have seen several benefits. Students who were introverted and seldom spoke to me, now will sit with Scully and talk to both of us. My severely depressed student who often isolates himself in anger, will have Scully sit under his desk. He whispers to Scully, and soon the student is participating fully in class with peers. Reluctant readers will sit in a beanbag chair, lift Scully onto their laps, and read novels to him. I have one reluctant reader convinced that Scully wants to learn to read Bunnicula. He is reading the entire novel to him! This week, however, another teacher approached the principal and said he/she wanted Scully out. The person refuses to reveal him/herself. The person said he was urinating all over, causing allergy attacks, and was a health risk.
Previous class pets:
none
Pets at home:
Scully lives at my house.
Other animal projects:
We study plants, not animals, in 4th grade. In second grade, the students follow caterpillars form to butterflies, and release them. The kindergarten has a rabbit. The first grade has tarantulas.
Animal info. wanted:
If anyone has research to support my project or which suggests the other teacher is correct, I would love to read it.

Classroom pets: I currently do not have a classroom, but would love to keep many animals in my classroom.
Previous class pets:
Pets at home:
Dozens of fish (cichlids), hermit crabs, a bearded dragon and two cats. I have had guinea pigs, rabbits, birds (parakeets, doves and pigeons), mice, rats, many different fish, and dogs.
Other animal projects:
Animal info. wanted:
I am currently taking a life science education class in which we are doing an animal project. Where we are taking care of an animal in the classroom, observing and learning about it. I am using a bearded dragon baby, they grow amazing fast, are cute and easy to handle. I have to come up with a hypothetical situation where I have enough bearded dragons for all my students to have one and an experiment (none harming) they can do. The experiment can not be strictly observational. So, I know there is no information on your web page about bearded dragons (which I find sad, they are so neat) if you have any ideas on what kind of experiment I could suggest, I would love to hear it.

E-mail: cjperry72@msn.com
School: Prairie Wind Elementary
Grades: 4th grade
Location:
Omaha, Nebraska
Classroom pets: Sparkle, a sapphire colored beta (fighting fish); Mesha, an elderly African clawed frog; we just lost Sugar, an albino lab rat, from old age; I am currently researching possible additions for this year. I was looking for a bird, but my husband (a junior high science teacher) is not fond of birds, believing them to be far too noisy. I really appreciated your information on rabbits.
Previous class pets:
Poco, a young red-eared slider turtle was part of my class when I was with sixth graders. I have done the RATS (Rats Are Teaching Science) program from our Dairy Council for three years now. Everyone but Sugar was adopted, so he stayed with me until old age claimed him.
Pets at home:
We also live with Sera, a 3 year old Rotti mix, and her kitten, Sam.
Other animal projects:
This is my first year teaching fourth grade, so I cannot recall the exact science curriculum. I am working with the other 4 fourth grade teachers to teach science, so I will be teaching the earth science section for the entire grade level. I know we will be studying Nebraska's history and animals as well.
Animal info. wanted:
As I mentioned, I appreciated the information on rabbits. I love hearing about frogs, though the non-aquatic species can be labor intensive to care for in the classroom.

Classroom pets: I currently have 4 goldfish and a river tank set up with native river dwellers (fish, crayfish, etc.).
Previous class pets:
I have had gerbils, hamsters, cockatiels, finches, snakes, and anoles.
Pets at home:
Besides Denali, I have two other dogs, a cat, and an African Grey parrot.
Other animal projects:
We have done a unit on insects where the students watched mealworms. We will also be doing
a unit on birds and bird development this spring.
Animal info. wanted:
I am looking for information on using dogs in the classroom. I acquired a siberian husky/golden retriever mix puppy at thanksgiving. My building principal is excited about having the dog in the classroom. I have incorporated "Denali" into my curriculum. My students are keeping a growth chart on Denali. Twice a week (Monday and Friday) the students take and record measurements in length, height, girth, and weight. These measurements are then passed on to the 6th grade math teacher who uses this information to practice graphing with our students. I have set up some basic rules for my students and for the safety and well-being of the puppy. I have 2 students per class period each day who are selected to be puppy sitters. They have the responsibilty of taking Denali out for potty breaks, cleaning up after him indoors or outdoors, and making sure he has food and water. In order to be able to puppy sit you must have your work from the previous week turned in. Boy has that had a positive impact on kids turning in their work! There are several students who come up to me and ask if they can have lunch detention so they can eat with Denali. We don't call that lunch detention. We refer to that as Dining with Denali. My tardy problem has essentially ceased since Denali came to school. I am hoping to have Denali certified as a therapy dog when he gets older. Right now we are working on basic obedience. Denali is a master sitter! The students are having a chance to learn about dog training, responsible pet ownership, and spaying and neutering. He will be neutered in March at the beginning of spring break. (Not exactly the best spring break activity, but a necessary one!). My building principal and I have talked about getting a service dog for the school for next year. We would like for our kids to have the opportunity to raise it at school and then have it trained and returned to us. After we have our own service dog, I think it would be a wonderful experience to do that type of project annually.

I would love to hear from other teachers who have done something similar and find out what their experiences have been. How did they go about it? What problems did they encounter? How were those problems solved?

Classroom pets: We use my own dogs as classroom pets. They come on Friday as a reward for the students' responsibility with homework. It's a great incentive! I have a lab named Rockester. He can't get enough attention as he strolls around the room with his sweet face getting love pats from the kids. My beagle, Miss Laudi, keeps to herself as she sleeps on our bean bag in the reading corner. The kids snuggle her during their free time. I feel my dogs help teach compassion, respect for life, and responsibiltiy. The students enjoy the unconditional love my dogs give. They make a great addition to the classroom atmosphere.
Jan 2000 note: My beagle, Miss Laudi, has learned a new trick. At recess she goes down the slide. It's a big hit with the kids and the dogs are as popular and loved as ever.
Pets at home: 2 dogs
Other animal projects: Later in the year we will study animal classification.

Animal info. wanted: I would like to know if any other teachers have dogs in their classrooms. I'd like to bring them more during the week. Does anyone else?
