ferret, 3 guinea pigs, tiger oscar, 2 desert millipedes, anoles.
In the area of guinea pigs, I don't let Angel have
more than 1 litter per year, and this year will be her 3rd and final
litter. The gestation period is long, and the babies are huge at birth.
I use this whole process in my study of reproduction in 5th grade.
Guinea pigs are so wonderful for this because the babies aren't so
fragile at birth and can be handled almost immediately. I also advise
giving them weekly baths to keep that hair around their little bottoms
clean and not matted. Both of mine have lots of thick hair on their
coats. I also like to bathe the ferret weekly. We just use a deep
bucket with warm water and ferret shampoo. I also have a great product
I got from a teacher friend to spray on him to help the smell. |

Classroom pets: We
have a sable-colored female ferret named "Coconut."
We also have a tropical fish named "Goldie" who we
think may be part Piranha... she ate her last aquarium buddy.
We had a worm farm in the spring, but when some died from an attempted "jail break" (some crawled out of our worm farm commercial container) and died of dehydration. I found them the next morning on the classroom floor and thought at first that someone had left some beef jerky on the floor! After that, we lovingly placed our surviving worms in a recently tilled flower bed on the school grounds. I think our little "earth engineers" were happy! This August, we are going to study ladybugs and I'm currently looking into purchasing a ladybug farm-- with a bank vault-safe lid! Pets at home: I have a silver Persian named Sebastian, a yellow tabby named Maddox, and a beautiful boxer named, well what else but "Rocky." Other animal projects: ladybugs, rainforest animals, and mice Animal info. wanted: ladybugs and mice Web site: http://www.infinitytx.net/springcreek1stgrade/ My note: This website has a lot to show us just how the Internet can be applied to those "little guys" and their families too! |
