E-mail: famdunc@prodigy.net
School: Antelope Valley High
Grades: Security (Discipline Room)
Location:

Classroom pets: At this time I have a rat (Marvin). I am attempting to add an abused Iguana. I take any injured animal on the campus.
Previous class pets:
Rat "Marvin", Fish, Red Eared Sliders, Anoles, Tree Frogs, Common Toad.
Pets at home:
3 dogs, rabbit "Buster" (that was a stray on our campus) Red Eared Sliders
Other animal projects:
I have the animals in my room for 2 very important reasons. Number 1 - They work wonders for some of the students that are held in my room for discipline problems.
Some students come into the room with a very high level of agitation and anger. These are the times that I will sit that person near my tanks to calm down. It is remarkable how it works. In a few minutes they are most often calmed. They connect to the animals wonderfully. The other reason for the animals is that I am able to use them to keep focus and release some of my tension. Since many of the students that I work with are ED, this can be a very high stress job and I must keep myself together at all times.
Animal info. wanted:
I am attempting to locate information of animal (pets) and the effect on the human mind.

Classroom pets: Parrots (African grey and Senegal, red bellied. They travel back and forth with me), rats, Guinea pig, rabbits, tortoises.
Previous class pets:
Bearded dragons, African fat tailed gecko, leopard gecko, oppossum I was hand feeding,
What animals as home pets:
The above mentioned parrots, dog, cat, leopard gecko, tarantula, tortoises, and other animals that come to me needing a home.
Other animal projects:
I'd like to set up a fish tank. I'd also like to bring in more reptiles. I used to breed exotic reptiles as a hobby. A kitten or puppy would be valuable for my students. We use the animals in a variety of learning situations. The animals have been a great aid in encouraging my non-verbal students to approximate speech and in some cases to say a word or two...usually the animal's name. They aid in math (count out three scoops for the Guinea pig...fill the water bottle half full, etc). They teach responsibility and love and friendship. They have been distracters for my violent students, and have calmed depressed and angry ones right down. Animals are magic!

Date registered: February 2001
E-mail: lkiapos@earthlink.net
School: Morningside Elementary
Grades: Second
Location:
Garden Grove, CA

Classroom pets: As of this date we have a tank full of stick bugs, two fire-belly newts, two tarantulas and four African black millipedes (very popular, and the children love to wear them as "bracelets"!). I am waiting for the arrival of two bearded dragons any day (our green water dragons died earlier this year and we have a lonely tank).
April Update... I have acquired two firebelly newts, two bearded dragons, and a totally cool "rotting log" environment which has a millipede, crickets, mealworm beetles, land snails, pill bugs and whatever other critters managed to hide away in the organic material that came with it (growing vegetative moss, soil, and of course some rotting log peices). The kids and I are fascinated with it!

Previous class pets:
We have had tadpoles (never got to the frog stage, though), crayfish (loads of fun), rats, guinea pigs, guppies, earthworms, silkworms, mealworms (always a favorite, especially when they become the adult beetles), waxworms, an ant farm, hamster, parakeets and even a crow (rescued when he fell out of his nest, but reintroduced to the wild, as they are a protected species in CA).
Pets at home:
Two dogs (Lab, Rottweiler, Shar Pei mix), two cats and all current classroom pets during the summer months.
Other animal projects:
I'm not sure what we'll decide on for this year's newest project... I had hoped for a hissing cockroach, but they are no longer available in our area.
Animal info. wanted:
Yes; I was thinking about getting a Leopard geko or two earlier this year, but was discouraged by some staff members at the store. Are they a good choice for the classroom or more active at night? How difficult is it to maintain them? Also, my millipedes seem to get inundated with fruit flies every couple of weeks; any ideas on avoiding this pesky problem

I have/have had 3 cats, 2 dogs, 6 rats, 2 frogs (1 Whites and 1 Pacman), mice (frog chow), 3 red eared sliders, 3 desert tortoises (1 is a baby of the 2 and yes I have the proper F&G permits)skinks, snake, hissing roaches, a variety of local bugs, emperor scorpions, bunnies, fish pond with koi, bullfrogs and various other unusual goldfish type fish, and the most unusual was the opossum.
Pets at home:
Other animal projects:
We have rescued 2 baby possum and nursed them to the point where they could be released. This was an excellent project as the children worked hard to feed, clean, care for and love these wonderful creatures knowing that they must be set free as was the right thing to do. We also learned that these are endangered wild animals. Extreme caution needs to be observed here.
