Kid Safe Search Engines
Gateways are lists of sites that have been checked out for quality
and appropriateness. Unlike a search engine, you have to do your
own hunting around.
CLN (Community Learning Network)
This site is sponsored by the BC Ministry of Education
A collection of 14 search websites with all of their search
boxes listed on one page.
SEARCH ENGINES AND DIRECTORY
A search engine has a database of
files. When you type in a word(s), it searches that database
and returns a list of links to websites on your topic.
ACE - Alvarado Cyber Explorers
"ACE is a hub of hundreds of educational links geared for students
and teachers in the elementary and middle schools. These links are organized
by school subjects. ACE is designed to be kid-friendly, "safe",
empowering. It encourages students to explore, initiate projects, and
conduct independent research."
Ask Jeeves for Kids
CyberSleuth KidsGoogle Safe Search for Kids
"Welcome to CyberSleuth-Kids.Com, an online search engine and guide
for the K-12 student. CyberSleuth-Kids is the creation of the hard work
of a teacher and the volunteers that make this site possible. The goal
of CyberSleuth-Kids is to provide a safe educational online database of
links to help the student sift through the maze of information."
IPL - Internet Public Library
The collection of the Youth Division of the Internet Public Library
is developed for children ages 4-11, their parents, teachers, and anyone
else interested in the literature and information directed to and about
children. Material used and sites recommended are chosen based on their
appropriateness for the subject matter (ie, science projects, math,
stories, literature discussion, etc) and should be written and maintained
by an authoritative source. The information should be current, accurate,
and presented in an objective and well-organized manner.
"...a safe Internet gateway for kids... created and maintained
KidsClick! was created by a group of librarians at the Ramapo Catskill
Library System, as a logical step in addressing concerns about the role
of public libraries in guiding their young users to valuable and age
appropriate web sites.
